The Otters of Tom Rudd Beck

As residents of Cockermouth will know, Story Homes have planning permission to build up to 320 new houses in the fields near Strawberry How Farm. An Ecological Report, produced on behalf of Story Homes, said Tom Rudd Beck was searched for otters in 2010 and 2012 and no field signs of otter were recorded. Furthermore, it recorded that no potential underground holt sites were found along the beck within the site or within 30 m of the site boundary.

As you can see, these videos, photographs and letters from leading animal trackers show that there are indeed otters living in the affected location. This information has been shared with Natural England, Cumbria Police Wildlife Unit, Allerdale Borough Council Planning Department and Story Homes.

Story Homes have confirmed, on 4th May 2016, that the ecologists will be revisiting the site later that week and will share the findings of the updated survey. Story Homes have also confirmed that the ecologists will be retained and will form part of a wider “environmental management team” for the project and will have an ongoing watching brief.
